Samarium Cobalt (SMCO) Magnet Detailed Introduction

Addtime:2022-06-20 14:58:11 Click:341

Samarium cobalt magnets are mainly permanent magnets composed of metal samarium, cobalt and some other rare earth elements. It has high magnetic energy product, extremely low temperature coefficient and high temperature resistance, and its operating temperature can be as high as 350°C. At the same time, it has strong corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Therefore, samarium cobalt magnets usually do not need to be electroplated, and are widely used in motors, instruments, sensors, detectors, engines, radar and other high-tech fields.

Samarium cobalt permanent magnet classification

Samarium cobalt magnets are based on two composition ratios, namely (samarium atoms: cobalt atoms) 1:5 and 2:17, that is, SmCo5 and Sm2Co17.

Types of samarium cobalt magnets;

Types of samarium cobalt magnets

1:5 samarium cobalt, also known as samarium cobalt 5, SmCo5, is a magnetic material made of metal samarium, cobalt or part of metal praseodymium instead of metal samarium, through a certain proportion of smelting, crushing, pressing and sintering. The maximum magnetic energy range of each brand is between 16-25, the maximum working temperature is 250 ℃, the maximum magnetic energy product is lower than that of 2:17 samarium cobalt magnet, but the mechanical properties and ductility are slightly better than 2:17, and it is easier to machine. The product is not as brittle as the 2:17 samarium cobalt magnet, so the 1:5 samarium cobalt magnet is suitable for processing into a shape specification that is not easy to process with the 2:17 samarium cobalt magnet. For example, wafers, squares, rings and special shapes of various complex shapes with particularly thin thickness or walls. In addition, the magnetizing magnetic field of 1:5 samarium cobalt magnet can be smaller than that of 2:17 samarium cobalt magnet. Generally, 40000 gauss magnetic field can be saturated, while 2:17 high coercivity samarium cobalt magnet needs 60000 gauss or more. High, recently due to the sharp increase in the price of rare earths, the rare earth content in the formula of 1:5 samarium cobalt magnets is as high as nearly 40%, so the price is much higher than that of 2:17 samarium cobalt magnets, users can make reasonable choices according to their own use conditions when designing Use a 1:5 or 2:17 samarium cobalt magnet.

2:17 samarium cobalt magnet, also known as Sm2Co17. It is a magnetic material made of metal samarium, cobalt, copper, iron, zirconium, smelted, crushed, pressed, sintered, and aged in a certain proportion. The maximum magnetic energy product range of each grade is between 20-32, and the maximum working temperature is 350 °C. Because 2:17 has a lower temperature coefficient and better corrosion resistance, the magnetic performance exceeds that of NdFeB magnets at high temperatures, so it is widely used. Widely used in aerospace, military fields, high temperature motors, automotive sensors, various magnetic drives, magnetic pumps, microwave devices, etc. 2:17 samarium cobalt is very brittle, and it is not easy to be processed into complex shapes or particularly thin flakes and thin-walled rings. In addition, because 2:17 samarium cobalt is particularly brittle, it is difficult to process during product processing or process turnover, inspection, and magnetization. Zhongdu is easy to cause small missing corners. We believe that as long as it does not affect the magnetic performance or function, it should be regarded as a qualified product. In addition, the user must handle it carefully during the use and assembly process to avoid the two magnets or the iron material attracting each other, causing the magnet to be broken. 2:17 The magnet is not easy to be magnetized and saturated. If the user needs to magnetize by himself, he must know how big the magnetic field of his magnetizing equipment is, and then choose the appropriate brand.

Samarium cobalt rare earth permanent magnet characteristics (advantages);

1. Very good coercivity.

2. Good temperature stability (the maximum operating temperature is 250 to 350 °C, and the Curie temperature is from 700 to 800 °C).

3. The material is brittle, the general shape is square and round, and it can also be made into arc (arc samarium cobalt magnet).

Disadvantages of samarium cobalt magnets;

1、Expensive and vulnerable to price fluctuations (cobalt market price sensitive).

2、The material is brittle, and it is easy to produce small missing corners. Customers who have extremely high requirements on appearance should use it with caution.

3、Due to the high difficulty of processing, the price of samarium cobalt magnets with complex shapes will be relatively expensive.
